A NEW NATIONAL PROGRAM

From the theatre company that brought the August Wilson Monologue Competition to the world, comes the True Colors Next Narrative Monologue CompetitionTM A new national program for high school students that will feature the works of contemporary African American playwrights and give opportunity, voice, imagination, exploration, creative expression and growth to all students.

​World Stage Theatre is the home of the Portland Next Narrative Monologue Competition and is made possible in Oregon by the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Ronnie Lacroute, Oregon Community Foundation, Black United Fund of Oregon, and Collins Foundation, The Next Narrative Monologue Competition Portland Regional Finals is presented by World Stage Theatre.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

This program serves high school students, grades 9 - 12. Regionally, students progress through three rounds: preliminaries, semi-finals, and regional finals. The top two winners from each region participate in the National Finals, receiving an all-expense-paid trip to New York City. Where students meet industry professionals, see a Broadway play, and perform at the legendary Apollo Theatre.

OBJECTIVES

  • Introduce students to today's leading contemporary Black writers

  • ​Expose students to acting techniques that enhance their knowledge of the art and skill of performance

  • Utilize the arts to support students in making co-curricular connections

  • Investigate how history and culture influence personal perspective through artful exploration

  • Embolden students to use their voices to inspire social change and action
